Retirement Calculator

Use this calculator to estimate how much you need to save for your retirement, and how much this will give you to live on each year.

About you
  1. Your age
  2. Your gender
  3. Your planned retirement age  *
  4. Your gross salary/wages (before tax) $ *
  5. Your current investments (if any) $ *
View notes
Note: You shouldn't include a house you own as an investment if you also live in it. You won't be able to cash in your house and spend all the money, because you will still need somewhere to live in retirement. Of course, if you expect to be able to sell your existing house and buy cheaper accommodation for retirement, you can include the difference in price as an investment.
  6. The rate of return you expect to receive from your investments (from now until retirement) % *
View notes
The amount that you expect your investments will earn per annum, after tax, fees and inflation, from now until retirement.
About your retirement
  7. You expect to receive NZ Super from age  *
(If you never expect to receive NZ Super, enter 0)
  8. Your expected amount of annual NZ Super (after tax) $ *
View notes
The amount you expect to receive a year in NZ Super, after tax.
Note: The current rate (1 April 2014) of NZ Super for a married couple is $29,355 ($14,677 for each partner ). For a single person, the rate is $19,080. There is no guarantee that these levels will be maintained.
(You can enter 0 if you don't expect to receive NZ Super or you want us to leave it out of your calculation)
  9. You can expect to live an active lifestyle until age  *

Something to think about: Your income needs may change as your lifestyle becomes less active. You will require less money for activities such as travel, but possibly more for health care.
(Whatever figure you enter here assumes you expect that after this age, the effects of old age will mean a less active lifestyle. Alternatively, if you believe you won't stop 'til you drop, you can enter 0!)
  10. The annual income you expect you'll need during your active period (after tax and including NZ Super) $ *
View notes
The annual amount you would like to live on after tax, including any superannuation payments.
  11. The rate of return you expect to receive from your investments during your active period % *
View notes
The amount you expect any remaining investments will earn per annum, after tax and inflation over the active period of your retirement.
Many people's appetite for risky investments drops during retirement as the focus shifts from maximising returns to preserving the principal sum invested.
  12. You expect to live to age  *
  13. The annual income you expect to need after your active period (after tax and including NZ Super) $ *
View notes
The amount you would like to live on after tax, including any super payments from the time the active period of my retirement ends.
  14. The rate of return you expect to receive from your investments after your active period % *
View notes
The amount that you expect any remaining investments to earn per annum when the active period of your retirement ends.
  15. Any money you plan to leave in your will  *
View notes
The amount you want to leave in your will, over and above your house.
Don't forget: We have suggested that you don't include the house you live in as an investment, because you will need somewhere to live in retirement. This has the added advantage that you will be able to leave your house in your will.
